Frequently asked questions

Where are you based?

The school is based in Kratie province and is about 10 minutes from Kratie town and the Mekong River.

How do I get there?

Minivans to Kratie leave from Phnom Penh Central Market at 6 am ( $6.25) and 11am ( price varies) to our house. Phnom Penh vans cannot be booked in advance but we can give advice on how and where to get them.
From Siem Reap ($10) Please contact us if you would like to arrange this and further details will be provided.

Must I have English as my native language to volunteer for DSE?

No, but we require a good standard of English, including grammar, and a strong commitment to help the students and our school. Accent is important for the students to be able to understand, so we give preference to volunteers without a strong accent.

How many hours per day will I volunteer?

Volunterrs must work for 3 hours per day. But, of course, you are always welcome to do more – there is always lots to be done at DSE

What is the minimum amount of time I can volunteer for?

We need a minimum 3 week commitment from our volunteers, so that the students have time to form a relationship with their teacher. There is no maximum amount of time for volunteers to stay, the longer the better for our students.

How many volunteers can come at a time?

We usually need 6 volunteers at any one time

What is the weather like in Kratie?

November to February is dry, with moderate heat (30 degrees). March and April is hotter, but usually still dry. From May, the temperature cools a little, but the humidity rises with some thunderstorms. The wettest months are September and October

What visa do I need to volunteer in Cambodia

Volunteers require an 'O' Visa, which is purchased on arrival in the country. It is not available online. It is valid for 1 month and can be easily renewed in Phnom Penh.
